Everything You Need to Know about Ketosis
Despite doing everything possible, from exercise to changing lifestyles, those stubborn fats refuse to let you go. Sometimes that makes us tired of trying. If that’s your case as well, then this new hope of light called ketosis can help you speed up this process. Some diets, such as the Ketogenic diet or Atkins diet are typical diet plans for weight loss based on this metabolic state.
Taking this into account, let's learn more about ketosis.
How your body goes into ketosis?
Normally, carbohydrates are the primary source of energy for your body. When the body burns fat for fuel, it is said to be in ketosis. Let’s understand this in detail.
Typically, when you eat carbohydrates in the form of starches or sugars, your body converts those carbs into glucose to use as fuel. The remaining glucose is kept in your liver and released when necessary.
These glucose reserves begin to deplete when your carbohydrate intake is very low. Therefore, your body starts to burn fat because there aren't enough carbohydrates for it to use as fuel. As a result, your body creates a substance known as ketones as it breaks down fat. These ketones, also known as ketone bodies, are used by your brain and body as their major energy source.
Your diet or your body's fat reserves may provide the fat your body requires to produce ketones.
Ketone production by your liver is rather limited. But as your blood glucose level drops, so does your insulin level. The liver increases the number of ketones it produces to ensure that your brain has enough energy. As a result, when you are in ketosis, your blood contains a lot of ketones, which are a standard indicator of being in ketosis.
Daily 50g carbohydrate consumption can trigger the state of mild ketosis.
How does your body react in ketosis?
When your body gets into ketosis, a huge transition happens. So naturally, there will be some consequences that you may have to face. Also, the intensity of these things depends on many factors, so there may be a possibility that you will experience mild symptoms.
You may start feeling extremely thirsty because dehydration can be a direct side effect. For this reason, it’s always better to drink plenty of water as a precaution, especially if you decide to start a diet.
Additionally, when you are drastically changing your dietary habits, your stomach may act a little weird at first. Be sure to have plenty of vegetables and high-quality fats to reduce the side effects.
Like many keto diet followers, you may also experience keto flu. Headache, fatigue, and nausea are some of the most common signs. But you don’t need to worry, as this typically lasts up to 1 week.
The bottom line
Just because lowering your carbohydrate intake can get you into ketosis, don’t go around eating processed food. Empty carbs and low-quality fats will have adverse effects on your system. Hence, it’s always better to consult a professional before going for any diet plan to induce weight loss like this.
