Weight Loss To Be The New Focus In Diabetes Management

Obesity and a higher BMI have been associated with a lot of lifestyle-related diseases, particularly diabetes. Increased body weight has been considered a key factor affecting insulin production and impaired blood sugar control. A recent study emphasizes and recommends a pivotal change in the treatment of type 2 diabetes- to shift the focus on obesity before sugar control.

Obesity has been believed to contribute to the progression of diabetes. But the recent study conducted at the UT Southwestern Medical Center suggested that instead of focusing on reducing blood sugar levels, the primary approach should be on treating obesity primarily.

Per the researchers, dropping 15% or more of one’s bodyweight could have a disease-modifying effect when it comes to managing type 2 diabetes which wasn’t attainable via blood sugar lowering interventions. This shift also means updating present treatment guidelines as well.

The existing approach relies on clinical studies from the early 1980s that emphasized blood sugar lowering interventions and suggested that they helped reduce disease complications. The problem with such an approach is that it fails to address the core issue and there is also no avenue to reverse the condition.

The researchers thus proposed a proactive approach hoping it might address the cause of diabetes- Obesity.
